BBC Review
There’s a real richness here, and raw venom beneath any fey first impressions, as gentle finger-picking bursts into free-jazz fuzztone guitar blasts and bloodied lyrics. It’s like angels and devils having a scrap over a Stratocaster. St Vincent’s lynchpin is the Tulsa-born daughter Annie Clark, one of nine siblings who grew up in the Texas Bible Belt. Clark sings for her supper with a convincing soprano, relaying dark, daft and delicious tales over orchestrations that are by turns lush and spiky. Imagine hugging a cactus.
